Skills Beyond School

Where activities become opportunities for lifelong success.

Your child is great at the activity or sport they’ve joined, but they’re struggling to keep up with the added responsibilities and time commitments.

While you’d like to help, you just don’t have the time to juggle the emails, texts, and information your child tells you on the way home from practice.
How different would this year be if your child knew how to manage their time, organize their materials, and planned for upcoming events?

The public school system might be teaching your child executive function skills, but most of those skills are one-size-fits-all systems that are built to function within the structure of school.

Extracurricular activities don’t have the same organization as school and often require students to develop additional executive function skills to succeed.

This program is designed to help your student build skills, by using their investment in the activity they love by teaching them how to:

  • Set meaningful, measurable, and achievable goals for the less structured environments of life.
  • Build a personalized time management system to help students balance their commitments.
  • Organize the materials needed for practice/rehearsal, as well as one-off performances and activities.
  • Help students work out the responsibilities before, during, and after practice or rehearsals.
  • Plan for one-off events or activities that shift in responsibilities during the year.
  • Respectfully communicate with peers and adults involved in their activity.
  • Learn to recognize and celebrate success.
  • Build their confidence and independence.

A Note From the Coach:

This program was inspired by the struggles I noticed in my own kids when the organization we use at home and in school didn’t work for their extracurricular activities.

After a last minute run for tights, the day before a show, I decided I couldn’t keep up with everything anymore. No matter how well organized I was, I was missing emails and sign ups. I had even missed a deadline for ordering a team shirt for one kid who joined a team late in the season!

My kids and I started talking about what skills they needed to take more responsibility for their activities and social obligations. The content of this program and many of the worksheets were a result of our conversations and my attempts to help them learn to think through their challenges. My hope is that it helps your child as much as it helped mine!
